General Information on Alcopops

Alcopops are flavored malt beverages that contain 5-7% alcohol by volume, which is more than most beers.  Well-known brands are Smirnoff Ice, Bacardi Silver, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, and Skyy Blue, among others. 

When asked what one type of alcoholic drink they would most like to drink, 30% of teens chose “alcopops” compared to 16% for beer and 16% for mixed drinks.

  • Approximately one-third of teen girls have tried alcopops.

  • 1 out of 5 teen girls who have tried alcopops have thrown up or passed out from drinking.

  • 1 in 6 teen girls who tried alcopops have been sexually active after drinking.

  • 82% of teen girls who have tried alcopops agree that they taste better than beer or other alcoholic drinks.

  • 34% of respondents think that alcopops have less alcohol than beer and similar drinks.
